Where did 5NP come from?

Use of ear acupuncture points to aid with detoxification were first discovered and reported on in China in the 1950s. 5NP has been in use for the last 40 years; this treatment was developed and championed by the Young Lords, the Black Panther Party, Lincoln Detox, and the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA). Building on their radical and important public health legacy, POCA’s Ear Circle created a training program whose mission is to train and support as many people as possible to become Auricular Acu-Technicians (AATs) and use the 5 Needle Protocol in their work and communities.

Why is 5NP an important tool?

The 5 Needle Protocol (5NP) is a simple, inexpensive, safe, easy to deliver, and effective ear acupuncture treatment created for non-acupuncturists to use in their communities to address issues and symptoms related to addiction, support in recovery, trauma, pain, toxic stress, ptsd, mental and physical tension, anxiety, and more. 5NP can also support focus, sleep, and digestion.

5NP is commonly used in a huge variety of settings, including with people who are currently using substances, in acute withdrawal, relapsing, and/or abstinent. It is simple to learn and apply, non-verbally, and strives for as few barriers as possible, making it easily integrated into many group settings.
