May 2016 Membership Drive Starts – NOW!

Happy May Day, POCA-verse!  It's the first day of the Membership Drive.  Normally by now, you'd be sick of hearing from me with preparations for the month-long drive.  But I've been moving (I'm writing this morning from my new house in St Petersburg, FL), and I've been sick, and I can't find things, and wah-wah-wah…..

So I was feeling a bit guilty about not being more of a leader for the Membership Drive, but I woke up this morning to these notifications on Facebook:

And I realized that POCA is all about leading from the ground up.  We (in the Membership Circle) make information available, support where we can, but it's always the members who make things happen.  We can't “impose our will” from above (no one here wants to be “above” anyhow), we can't require clinics to participate in Membership Drives, we can't hold patients hostage until they join POCA.  But we can make available the compelling information that makes people just naturally want to jump on board the POCA bandwagon.  It's a fun place to be!  Join us!

Your clinic will be receiving an email in the next couple of days which includes all members listed from your clinic and their expiration dates.  This is to help you remind the ones who are coming due for renewal.  The email will also include some Membership Drive materials to help you encourage new memberships.  You don't need to hard sell people on joining POCA – just print up a couple of posters on some brightly colored paper and post them around the clinic – and then answer people's questions.

We're looking for 450 new and renewal memberships in May – proceeds from the Membership Drive dues will benefit the POCA Tech site inspection by ACAOM, which is part of the accreditation process.  POCA is a key part of the funding of POCA Tech, and this is one way you can help.  Become a member, encourage others to become POCA members.  There are benefits!  Go to to register or renew.

Conference Keynote: Breaking the Ceiling

The theme for this conference is “Breaking Barriers”. You know, there are so many barriers to break in acupuncture that it was really hard to choose which ones to talk about for this speech. But since I’ve spent so much time talking about classism as a barrier, I thought it might be fun to shift gears a little and talk about numbers.
