I’m not sure a blog post is adequate for this particular event*** but it’s what we’ve got, so here goes.
Huge thanks to
POCA Tech’s Sustainers, for sending monthly donations which literally sustain the school’s operations;
to Working Class Acupuncture for donating its clinic infrastructure to POCA Tech;
and of course to the POCA Cooperative itself, and all its volunteers. For making this not only possible, but worth doing.
It’s amazing. We throw that word around all the time, but it’s really, really amazing that the co-op could pull this off. This is what co-ops are meant to do — important stuff that normal capitalism doesn’t allow or won’t make room for.
To quote Wikipedia: Cooperatives’ values are based on “self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity.” Co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.
POCA hauled all those values into the business of acupuncture education (where previously, they were not notably represented) and made a school that reflects them. Not only did the process of accreditation NOT make us abandon our values, it pushed us to live them harder and articulate them more clearly. Getting POCA Tech accredited surely must be one of the most co-op-y things ever done by a co-op, and I’m so, so, so proud of us.
