Snappy Comeback at the Gas Pump

Community Acupuncture San Anselmo now offers free acupuncture to all from noon to 3 PM every second Thursday of the month. In the week preceding Free Day, I usually sport a magnetic sign on my car announcing free acupuncture. So does my husband. The other day he was filling his car at a local gas station when someone at the pumps called to him. He didn’t realize he was being addressed because the guy was calling “Hey! Hey!” When he didn’t respond, the fellow said, “Hey, Needle Guy!” Having won his attention, he asked my husband: “Isn’t this acupuncture a bunch of hooey?”

This got me thinking of snappy comebacks we could have at the ready when approached by folks like this. I told Bruce to say: If acupuncture is hooey and voodoo and all that, then why is the U.S. Army training their doctors to do acupuncture to use on their soldiers in combat? It fixes them up right away so they can soon be sent back to the lines. Remember that the U.S. military uses every technological advance long before civilians learn about it. And tell them to google this online and find out for themselves.

How about it, Comrades?I’ll bet you have some good ones to throw into the pot?

I earned a B.A. in Hotel/Restaurant Admin, but soon realized that I wanted to do something more meaningful. Became interested in nutrition and education when pregnant with my first child. Interest in health led me to becoming a foot reflexologist, which led to a massage practice and suddenly discovering the love of my life: Chinese medicine! Practicing for 18 years, Hawaiian/Californian, acu-educated PCOM San Diego/OCOM Portland. Started my CAP in San Rafael, Marin County, July 4, 2006, even while earning my doctorate at OCOM. This didn't seem to make sense, but it was my way of comparing the old way of practicing acupuncture to a simpler, truer expression of what I had learned in school. I love it. And I love being a part of this grand movement to change the world by being true to our conscience. Reopened all over again when I moved to a place where no one had ever heard of me. 3 months open so far, and just beginning to meet expenses. I have no doubt this will succeed and I will be hiring by next year.

  1. Of course…

…the US military has a long and inspiring track record of intelligent decisions.

That argument came to mind for me as well and it’s a difficult one to tackle without getting overly defensive. I guess you could say something like:

“You’re absolutely right, your anecdotal argument is certainly more compelling than those fools at MIT and Harvard Medical School”

Or, just kick him in the balls; whatever works for you.

  2. I agree, Whitsitt. It doesn’t

matter what we say as acupuncturists to someone who says something like this. There’s nothing we can say that will change a person’s mind about it. The best thing is for the skeptic to feel the acupuncture experience.

  3. I always bring up pet

I always bring up pet acupuncture. It works and there is no placebo effect in animals! I didn’t know that about the US Army though… I am going to have to start using that!
