Five minutes and five bucks. That’s all that’s needed to make a huge difference.

Greetings POCA peep! I’m back from my West Coast Community Acupuncture Road Trip also known as my first real vacation since becoming a clinic owner. It was the first time in my 40 years on earth that I actually missed my job.

Though it was hard to get away and be someone other than a punk/clinic owner, the experience gifted me with the opportunity to visit the Mothership, Working Class Acupuncture. Skip and Lisa were kind enough to give us (hubby and me) a sneak peek of POCAtech, our soon-to-be community acupuncture school. And it really was just a peek as we peered into what will be the student lounge and stood in the student parking lot.

This was just the inspiration I needed after ruminating on the trials and tribulations acupuncture students currently face. I entered school with a hopeful heart only to graduate exhausted, under-educated on things that will actually help my clinic run and my patients get better while being saddled with a ridiculously large student loan. If it wasn't for POCA’s forums, books, my POCA mentor and our punk community, I don’t know where I’d be as a practitioner right now.

And that’s where my hopeful heart gets nourished. In order for community acupuncture to grow, thrive, replicate, we need acupuncturists who know how to run a busy clinic. POCAtech can provide that at a fraction of the cost most acupuncture schools charge. On the long drive home, I thought about what I could do to help. My clinic is still under a year old and I am swimming in new business tasks. I don’t have a trust fund that I can dip into and dish out a large monetary gift to POCAtech but I do have $10 that I can scrape together from my clinic’s success. I also have this old laptop that can type up this blog about what you can do to help. It’ll take 5 bucks a month and only 5 minutes of your time. Go to right now. Click on the “Donate Now” button. Make a recurring $5 monthly donation to POCAtech. Do it now.

We have 168 active clinics when I last checked our POCA site. If every clinic pledges $5, we’ll have $840 per month floating into POCAtech. If every clinic pledges $10 month, our school will have $1680 per month. If 100 patients and/or punks pledge $5/month, we’ll have another $500/month for a school that is so very needed in the U.S. Five minutes and five bucks. That’s all that’s needed to make a huge difference. Once you've pledged, shout it from the rooftops. Call your POCA friends and tell them what you did and ask them to pledge the same. Share it on your Facebook and tag your POCA friends. Let’s pay it forward. Ready. Set. Go.

Survey of CAN clinics

Skeptics in the acupuncture community say that CA clinics can’t be successful.  A variety of reasons are cited – prices too low, patients want one-on-one attention and wouldn’t like treatments in a room with other people, Dr.

  1. Thank you for reminding me that I haven’t yet donated to POCAtech. I’ve been meaning to and just don’t remember when I’m by a computer. I like your idea of monthly donations so I just signed up for a monthly contribution.

A small amount can go a long way when donated monthly. Thanks for taking the lead on this.

  2. Yahoo!! Great news, Kerri & Kimzqi! Thus far we have 4 people/clinics that are pledging. This is WONDERFUL news! Once you pledge, let us know so I can shout it from the rooftops and allow your action to inspire others to do the same.

  3. Just wanted to say I followed your instructions and the minimum donation per month is $10 through Razoo, which is where you go when you click on Donate Now. Also they store your cc information if you click on “Recurring Donation”. It looks optional but you can’t uncheck the box. I’m okay with that, but some people might not be.

  4. as for heading the charge, it turns out that lisa, melissa and a few others had the same idea and were working on it before i posted. spooky, cosmic stuff, right?
