Found community acupuncture in my last year of acupuncture school and it was like cool water on the dry desert of aculand. It addressed all those nagging questions of how to make acupuncture accessible and inviting to people like me, in my own communities as well as actually make a living and I knew I would practice this way for the rest of my life. I have learned more (about acupuncture, about people and community, about myself) in the past few years of running a CA clinic and being an acupunk at another BDC clinic than ever before. It's one of my all-time favorite places to be. I am eternally grateful to this community for its welcoming support, its passionate determination and its irreverence for useless sacred cows. I look forward to our continued work in supporting community acupuncture clinics worldwide!

Survey of CAN clinics

Skeptics in the acupuncture community say that CA clinics can’t be successful.  A variety of reasons are cited – prices too low, patients want one-on-one attention and wouldn’t like treatments in a room with other people, Dr.

Conference Keynote: Breaking the Ceiling

The theme for this conference is “Breaking Barriers”. You know, there are so many barriers to break in acupuncture that it was really hard to choose which ones to talk about for this speech. But since I’ve spent so much time talking about classism as a barrier, I thought it might be fun to shift gears a little and talk about numbers.

  1. POCAfest is the best way to earn CEU’s EVER! Where you actually get to meet people and make new friends.

Every POCAfest I’ve met a ton of people I can call when I need help.

I love the people at POCAfest.

Every POCAfest I learn things that I can use everyday in my clinic i.e. Andy’s blood letter, distal point treatments, Whittsit’s class on fibromyalagia, Carmen’s class on Accounting proactices. I love POCAfest <3

    I can't wait for POCAfest.

    P.S. Who else can say they've jello wrestled for CEU's ? 😉

  2. POCAfest is the best way to connect with other punks from all over. Seriously fun times…

You will learn tons of useful information that you can put to work right away, whether about needling techniques, interpersonal skills, business skills, or how to wear a merkin.

You’ll probably get to see Skip cry. That’s worth the price of admission right there.

You might even get a little misty yourself. It’s pretty inspiring getting together with everyone.

When you get home after POCAfest, your patients will ask you what the hell you did over the weekend, on account of you’ll be glowing with enthusiasm.

  3. For me the best thing about going to a POCAfest is meeting new friends and reconnecting with old ones. The friends you make at a POCAfest will become your trusted advisors – as Jade mentioned above, you’ll come home with a list of people you can call anytime you need help.

Also, POCAfest is an extremely cost-effective way to get CEUs. CEUs that are 100% relevant to your practice. Plus you get to hang out with a bunch of cool community punks. And the food is always great. And the entertainment is legendary.

What are you waiting for?? Go register for POCAfest 2013!!

  4. We do so much of POCA’s circle work in a decentralized, virtual way. One circle I’m in has punks in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, California, and Colorado-on-the-way-to-California. Another has punks in Rhode Island and Portland. Another has punks from all over. At any given time I’m carrying on conversations in the forums with punks and patients from all over this and 4 other continents.

I’m going to POCAfest so I can hug them.

  5. It’s been amazing to be at each POCAfest and hear from each clinic owner and employed punk how things are progressing at their clinics. At one point so many of us were all alone, and now clinics that were once solo punks, have employees, or some of us have joined our comrades at other clinics. POCA and POCAfest means strength in numbers. The only group in the acu profession that has that.
